Job Description

Chloeta is seeking an Archaeological File Scanner to support cultural resource surveys, archaeological field investigations, and historic preservation activities throughout the National Forests in North Carolina. This position will assist with archaeological site identification, GPS mapping, field documentation, and data collection associated with disaster recovery and natural resource management projects.

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 45 days.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Prepare, maintain, and organize archaeological field notes, survey records, site documentation, and supporting materials in accordance with project requirements.
• Collect, bag, tag, label, and document archaeological artifacts while maintaining accurate artifact logs, inventories, and collection records.
• Conduct field photographic documentation of archaeological sites, artifacts, features, and survey areas, including maintaining organized photograph logs.
• Complete archaeological field forms, including shovel test records, excavation documentation, Munsell soil descriptions, and site condition assessments.
• Assist with archaeological pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, subsurface investigations, and cultural resource field assessments in support of disaster recovery projects, as assigned.
• Support archaeological site identification, GPS mapping, and documentation of project boundaries, Areas of Potential Effects (APE), survey transects, and archaeological site locations.
• Assist with field inventories, cultural resource monitoring, site assessments, and post-implementation inspections as needed.
• Support laboratory personnel with artifact washing, labeling, cataloging, counting, weighing, and processing.
• Organize and prepare archaeological field data, artifact records, and photographic documentation for cultural resource reports and Principal Investigator review.
• Ensure all archaeological fieldwork, documentation, and artifact handling activities comply with federal agency standards, North Carolina Office of State Archaeology (NC OSA) guidelines, and project-specific requirements.
• Perform additional archaeological documentation and field technician duties under the direction of the Principal Investigator or designated supervisor, as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Knowledge of archaeological field survey methods, cultural resource identification, and site documentation procedures.
• Ability to operate GPS equipment and collect accurate geospatial field data.
• Familiarity with archaeological mapping, survey transects, Areas of Potential Effects (APE), and site recording methods.
• Ability to conduct pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, and subsurface archaeological investigations.
• Knowledge of archaeological artifact handling, labeling, cataloging, and field documentation procedures.
• Familiarity with NHPA Sections 106 and 110, ARPA, and applicable cultural resource preservation regulations.
• Ability to prepare accurate field notes, site descriptions, photograph logs, artifact inventories, and survey records.
• Familiarity with GIS and mapping software, including ArcGIS or comparable geospatial applications.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively under the direction of a Principal Investigator and technical specialists.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate uneven, rugged, or remote terrain.
• Ability to follow established archaeological field methods, safety protocols, and project-specific instructions.
• Be well versed in computer use and proficient in the following: All Microsoft windows and Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher) , GPS data collection and or use of a total station/web application such as Avenza or Field Maps
• Active and valid driver's license maintained throughout employment, when driving is required for assigned duties.

Education and Experience

• Required: Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related from regionally or nationally accredited university
• Required: Successful completion of an accredited archaeological field school
• Required : Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience as an Archaeological Field Technician
• Required: Possesses a working knowledge of standard archaeological survey methods in North Carolina

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in rugged, remote, and environmentally challenging terrain.
• Ability to hike long distances over uneven ground while carrying field equipment.
• Ability to perform repetitive digging and screening during archaeological surveys.
• Ability to lift, carry, and transport field equipment, screens, shovels, backpacks, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, climb, and stand for extended periods.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and dense vegetation
• This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
• Valid driver's license with the ability to travel extensively throughout North Carolina.

Pre-employment Requirements

Due to the nature of Chloeta’s services, this position is contingent upon completing with a satisfactory outcome some or all of the following pre-employment background screenings: government security clearance, federal and state criminal background checks, drug test (urinalysis), Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, educational history, employment history, and/or credit check. Additionally, employees are required to complete the federal I-9/E-Verify process.
